Your digital pictures and images Suitable Images

You should be able to use almost any image taken on a modern digital camera or scanned on a desk-top scanner as long as the images are saved as jpegs (This is usually the default setting on most devices, but by consulting the devices instruction manual you should be able to save images as jpegs)

Rejected Images

The only restriction on jpeg images is that they must be made up of a sufficient number of pixels to enable us to print a satisfactory reproduction of your original image. If an image is of too low a quality, it will be rejected by the One Publisher book making software, to ensure that your finished book looks as good as possible. If you have scanned an image and it has been rejected, try adjusting the settings on your scanner and scan your photo at a higher resolution. (Most standard settings for a scanning a photo on a scanner is 300dpi. If, however, your photograph is really small, try scanning it at 600dpi or even 1,200dpi ). For more information, see our Scanning Tips below

Poor Quality Images

Our software cannot make a poorly focused or exposed image look better than the original, and sometimes by zooming in too close on an image, such short-comings can be exacerbated.

Reproducing Old Photographs

Old photographs can be easily scanned using desk-top scanners. Modern devices are able to save these images as jpegs which can then be loaded into your book. Attention should be given to ensure that the resolution selected when scanning and saving an image produces sufficient pixels (the dots that make up the image) to make it acceptable for our book making software. A minimum of 150 dpi (dots per inch) is required.

Scanning Tips

Almost certainly you will have many different types and sizes of photographs that you may wish to use in your Caring Memories Book. These will all require scanning to transform them into jpegs, the digital format required in order to load them into our One Publisher Software and into your Book.

The most important aspect in scanning is that settings are adjusted so that, however small your original photograph is, there are sufficient pixels (or dots) in the digital image you create, to be able to enlarge it or zoom into particular parts of the photograph without it being rejected by our quality control software. The setting on your scanner you need to be most aware of is the dpi (dots per inch) setting for each scan. On all modern scanners, this can be adjusted from a conventional 150dpi up to a very high 1,200dpi. Generally, the smaller your original photograph is, and the larger you will have to expand it to fill a picture hole in our book, the higher the level of dpi you should scan your photograph.

Here is a rough, rule of thumb guide, for which dpi setting you should use for different size and types of original photographs you may have.

Very Small Contact Prints
(very common from the 1930's to the 1950's)

Scan at 1,200dpi
Original Size approximately 1"1/2 x 1"1/2 (40x40mm)
NB: Scan in Full Colour to retain sepia look

Small Black & White Prints

Scan at 600dpi (or 1,200dpi if you want to put it into a large picture box in your Book)
Original Size approximately 2"x3"
NB: Scan in Full Colour to retain sepia look

Modern 6"x4"Print

Scan at 300dpi
Original Size Size 6"x4"

One Publisher User Manual

In order to make one of our books or products the first step is to download our easy-to-use One Publisher software onto your PC or Mac - just click 'Make a Book' button on the website and follow the online instructions It has been verified as being totally safe and secure by Thawte. Instructions for Download are shown below in the Download section.

Online Working and your images

Our One Publisher Software has been designed to be simple and fun to use. There, are however, three fundamental features that you need to aware of:

  • Although our One Publisher software is a download, in order to make one of our books you must be online at all times as our One Publisher Software continually updates your PC or Mac with the latest versions of our software and products.
  • Because our One Publisher software is downloaded onto your PC or Mac you are working on you can only make a book on that specific machine.
  • Once you have started to make a book it is important that you do not move images into different folders within your directories or rename them, as our One Publisher software would no longer be able to locate them.
Registration

Before you can download our One Publisher and start making a book, you must register so that when you download our One Publisher software and any of our products, they can be continually updated with the latest version.

Download

To begin, click 'Make a Book' button on the website. Once you have selected a product,, you can then click the 'launch button' to download our easy-to-use One Publisher software. It is a Java application that can run on PC, Mac or Linux. Minimum requirements are as follows:

  • You must have a version of Java 1.4.2 or later on your machine. Many machines have this as standard, but if not we will display a simple link for you to follow for you to download this onto your machine or you can download it here.
  • 256MB Ram (512MB Recommended). Most PCs produced in the last five years will have this as standard
  • 100MB available disc space. If this is not available on your machine, an error message will be displayed asking you to remove files and programs in order to free up sufficient space

Note that some browsers will block downloads until you authorise them. If you see the Information Bar appear when you are trying to download the One Publisher then click on the Information Bar and select 'Download File...'.

Internet Explorer Information Bar

Once you click the Download Button you will be shown a Trust Certificate from Thawte which you should accept by clicking Run. This allows our software to be downloaded onto your machine.

A Progress Bar will then indicate that the One Publisher Software is downloading

You will be asked to accept a short-cut for the One Publisher on your Desktop. Please select 'Yes' otherwise the software will not function. Unlike many applications, ours is written in Java in order to run on many different kinds of machine. As a consequence we cannot automatically deliver it into your list of programs once downloaded. By clicking Yes to the short-cut, this ensures that the application is stored in an accessible manner on your machine, otherwise it may prove very difficult to find the application once installed and we cannot guarantee that it will run properly. Screen shot of short-cut dialog Trust Certificate

Once the Software is downloaded the application will begin to open. At this point you will be presented with a Trust Certificate, verified by Thawte, which you should accept in order to run our One Publisher software. If you click the always trust box you will not see this box each time you log-in.

Log-in

Next a Log-in Screen will appear. Here you should enter your e-mail address and password you entered at Registration. If you have forgotten your password it will be on the email sent to you when you successfully registered, or you can click to have it sent to you again.

If at anytime you wish to proof your project on paper, rather than on screen, you can simply hit the Print Page Button on the left hand side in order to print a low-resolution sample page on your own printer for checking. This is strongly recommended.

Navigating Pages within your project

Once you have completed a page, simply click on another page at the top of the screen. At this point the small image of the page you have just been working on, will display any changes you have made.

Saving your project.

Every time you change to a new page your work is saved, even if you have a power failure. If, however, you wish to save your work while you are still on a page, simply hit the Save Button on the left at anytime. If you click the Save and Exit Button (or your normal close screen buttons top right hand corner of the screen) you will be returned to your Project Library Page.

The Progress Column will show what % of image holes you have filled or whether you have 100% finished your project and your book is ready to be made. (This figure does not show if all your captions are complete as you are not required to always have a caption for every image)

Screen shot of One Publisher Library with product at 80% completion Once you have completed a Caring Memories Book, while you can click on Buy a Book and make a purchase immediately we strongly recommend that you firstly click on the "Create a Flipbook" Button on the left-hand side of the Application. This part of the process is FREE OF CHARGE and by creating a Flipbook you will have an online page-turning version of your Caring Memories Book that you can share with trusted colleagues, family and friends. Automated Album Checking

Once you click the "Create a Flipbook" Button (or the "Buy Now" Button) our software will check your album to ensure that there are no technical problems with any of the images (eg. corrupt jpeg files etc). (This process will not check to see if the images are good from a subjective perspective - If images are blurry, out of focus, over or under exposed - then the user must decide whether to use them or not). This process also does not check for any spelling or grammatical errors in captions (this again is the responsibility of the user) Once checked the upload process will continue.

Screen shot of One Publisher Library with upload dialog box Uploading your project

Alternatively, after a few minutes, you can log into the website and view your Flipbook in Your Accounts.

Screen shot of One Publisher Library with upload successful dialog box

You can even use this process to get people to check over the online FlipBook before you purchase an actual hard copy of the Book. If anyone spots any mistakes, you can simply re-open the Project, make any changes and click on the "Create a Flipbook" Button once more. This will automatically replace the incorrect Book with the one you have corrected.

Purchasing a Book

Only once you have completed a Caring Memories Book can you make a purchase of an actual hard copy of the Book.
